Ostend Ostend is right off the edge of the UK map and so it will be necessary to buy a Dutch or Jeppeson map for the trip. Ostend is fully covered in Pooleys. Interestingly one of the main reporting points you will need is Koksijde which is pronounced Cocksy. Ostend is a huge airfield and the GA ramp is at the far South West end. Sometimes the follow me van will wait to take you to the tower, but at other times it is necessary to call for a car to take you to the terminal. The number to call is on a placard. I have sometimes walked to the tower which takes 20 minutes or so. Above: The GA Ramp, don't be fooled that is not the control tower! Above: The control tower is way away in the distance
Above: Booking in and the self briefing unit are in the base of the tower. There is a full met office on the first floor. Above: Filing the flight plan is by fax and unusually followed up with a phone call to Brussels info to check the details. Notes and numbers are on the notes by the fax. Above: Entry to the terminal is by the usual arrivals gate along from the tower.
Above left: Passports will be checked in the cubby hole labelled Politie, next to the ladies loo. Above right: exit to the street is via the normal exit. Above: Do not leave the field without a chitty issued by the handler (usually the driver of the follow me van). Without it you will not be able to get back to your aeroplane. Above: Entry to security on return is straightforward. Just have your luggage X-Rayed, show your documents, hand over the chitty, and go to the tower for flight briefing. |
