How to Fill in a Flight Plan

Yes you are right, this an Irish Flight Plan form and it starts at box 7....

Box 7 Enter the aircraft registration.

Box 8 Enter the flight rules which for us is always V (VFR) and G (General Aviation).

    

Box 9 Enter number of aircraft which is one unless you are the Red Arrows, the type of Aircraft (e.g. PA28, PA32 AA5 et al) and the wake turbulence category which will be L (unless you are flying an airliner).

 

Box 10 Enter the transponder details which are S (Standard) and / C if you have altitude encoding.

Box 11 and 12 are missing

Box 13 Enter the departure aerodrome and time of departure (remember this is to be in UTC. In summer that is 1 hour earlier than UK time). Note: this does not have to be exact. You can go late by several hours but not early.

 

Box 15 Enter Your Aircraft's Cruising speed in Knots (N) and the altitude at which you intend to fly. Enter VFR and you can fly at any altitude you like!

  

Enter the route you intend to fly excluding the departure and arrival airfields. In this case Direct to Sevenoaks VRP, Direct from there to Dover VOR and from there Direct to Calais.

Box 16 Enter the destination airfield and how long the flight will take. Then enter the Alternate or diversion destination.

      

Box 18 Enter the other information which is always the time from take off until crossing the FIR boundary. The FIR codes are shown on the UK Map. LFFF is North Eastern coast of France (The Paris FIR).

Box 19 Enter the duration of the aircraft with the amount of fuel you have on board and ensure that this is at least enough to cover the trip plus diversion and reserve. If not you have just written the prosecution case when you crash!

Enter the number of people on board including yourself.

Enter the emergency radio which is always the normal one fitted to the aircraft, which is VHF.

Enter the survival equipment which in this case is:

Yes we have survival equipment, we do not have Polar survival equipment, we do not have desert survival equipment, we do have maritime survival equipment but do not have jungle survival equipment.

Enter the Life Jacket details in this case:

Yes we have jackets, we do have a light on the jackets, we do not have flares, we do not have UHF communications but we do have a VHF locator beacon.

Enter the dinghy details if you have one.

Enter the Aircraft Colour and Markings

Enter the name of the Pilot.

Now fax it to London Flight Clearance
