Calais Calais is the traditional entry to France, and has the shortest over water time. Once there however there is little to recommend Calais as a destination. It is a good entry into the European Shengen system which means that after your first stop you do not have to keep going through customs. Perhaps one day Great Britain will sign the Shengen treaty and we can forget all this officialdom. Calais has one runway which always seems to be cross wind at 25 knots! There is an ILS from the North.
Above: Calais airfield from the South west is quite difficult to spot Above: After landing fuel up.
Above: Entry to the terminal building Above: Book in and pay for fuel and landing fee at the Chambre de Commerce booth Flight plans are filed in the tower, despite the Shengen agreement it is still necessary to file a flight plan when crossing and FIR boundary so for flights to Belgium, Holland or back the UK a flight plan must be filed. The Calais tower is something of a maze, so here is the route:
Above: Enter the Tower by the door on the air side of the tower
Above: Cross the room, through the door and up the stairs, cross the landing and enquire at the intercom.
Above: Take the first door on the right labelled Tour de Controle and climb the stairs. Above: At the top climb the spiral staircase to the tower Above: File your flight plan by fax and get met from the air traffic controller.
Above: On the way down, descend the spiral staircase then the ordinary staircase. Do not continue down these stairs it leads to a dead end. Instead turn left through the security door, across the landing and down the stairs. Above: At the bottom through the door and back airside. |
