Caen Caen is one of the less well known entry points into France possibly due to its position well inland from the Bai du Normandie. It has little to recommend it except that it is a reasonably short taxi ride from Bayeux, home of the tapestry, which is well worth a visit. It has the advantage of runways at 90 degrees so arrival in any condition is practical.
Above: The apron at Caen with the old terminal in the foreground and the new terminal in the distance. Booking in is at the main terminal, but beware once you pass through the terminal there is no way back through security. Better leave airside to visit the restaurant through the control tower. The security codes are noted on the airfield side of the doors, so note them before you leave and you can get back to your aircraft with no hassle.
Above: Booking in at the terminal, expect a long wait at lunch time Filing a flight plan should be done in the tower using the peculiar French computer system.
Above: entry to the tower through the door in the porch A full blown Meteo France office is available with all mod cons and it is free. Beware though it closes for lunch! Leave the apron through the Tower (noting the security codes) and turn left, do not be distracted by the shed with a Meteo France label on it.
Above left: Don't be distracted by the large shed, this is the Meteo France office right. Finally there is only one taxiway from the runway to the apron which can get congested, if you are unlucky and not permitted to backtrack the runway, the grass taxiway is very rough, you have been warned. |
